The endemic crises being faced by orchestras the world over, heightened by the well-publicised failure of several orchestras in the USA in recent times, has a corollary in the current problems that have beset our own Orchestra Victoria (OV). For those of you not local to Melbourne, OV is primarily a service orchestra for our national Ballet and Opera companies.
To gain a brief, but erudite perspective on the general malaise of some of the world’s fine cultural music institutions, I suggest a quick read of the 2 July 2011 Issue of Classical Music (pp. 29-31) filed by New York journalist, Susan Elliott. It is fascinating and excellently written, albeit dismal in its findings.
