Defying Gravity: Kevin Goes to New York

OK, so I am off to New York tomorrow to sit-in on the rehearsals and attend opening night of Stephen Schwartz’s new opera, Séance on a Wet Afternoon being produced by New York City Opera. I was privileged to witness the birth of this extraordinary new opera at its premiere at Santa Barbara Opera in 2009, and even more delighted to have conducted excerpts from it in Australia last year with the Tasmania Discovery Orchestra whilst Stephen was ‘down-under’. The opera is executive produced by Michael Jackowitz and directed by Scott Schwartz.

On this trip, I’m also going to see DEFYING GRAVITY: THE MUSIC OF STEPHEN SCHWARTZ at Lincoln Center on 21 April, featuring the incredible talents of Kristin Chenoweth, Raúl Esparza, Victor Garber and Ann Hampton Callaway. It’s especially exciting because I have supervised most of the orchestral arrangements for the show, aided by two great orchestrators in their own right: Mark M. Buys (Australia) and conductor/orchestrator, Jeffrey Schindler (USA). Thank you guys, I would never have got it all done on my own in the time!

Finally, for those of you have visited before, this new web site that has been put together; as was my previous, beautifully hand-coded online presence, by my long-time graphic design and all-things-Web conspirator – Chris Stevens. It’s sad to see the old one go, but web site design has changed so much in seven short years! Thanks for the tireless and brilliant work Chris.

More updates to follow whilst in New York. Thanks for dropping by.
